Hash House Harriers is often described as 'a drinking club with a running problem'. There are hundreds of chapters spread around the globe yet, unlike a boy band, no two are the same. In basic terms, hash involves some running and some drinking - not neccessarily in that order and the proportion of each differs at each chapter.
It is probably best expressed in this excerpt from the 1938 charter of the Kuala Lumpur Hash House Harriers:
- To promote physical fitness among our members
- To get rid of weekend hangovers
- To acquire a good thirst and to satisfy it in beer
- To persuade the older members that they are not as old as they feel
Burnie is a mixed hash club, which currently runs Sunday afternoons at 6:00pm, moving to 3:30pm in winter. Burnie runs are usually around the 45-minute mark and the pace can be fairly sedate. Hash horrors and dogs are tolerated.
